Troopers Hill
Local Nature Reserve
Awards for All Grant 2007/8

Friends of Troopers Hill received news in September 2007 that they have been awarded £5,000 by Awards for All, the public announcement of this Lottery Funded award was made on 23rd October.

Trooping the Hill

Part of the grant was for an interpretive project with local school children to celebrate the story of Troopers Hill. The project involved environmental arts and performance to bring the History of Troopers Hill to life. The event called: 'Trooping the Hill' took place on the afternoon of the 28th June before the evening jazz concert.

This fun, interactive performance for all ages whisked us away on a journey through time and space as we shared stories, music and song inspired by Troopers Hill. Our adventure ended with a fantastic Strawberry Feast - the first on the hill for over 100 years!

Designs for Improved Entrances

The remainder of the grant was to redesign two of the entrances to the hill - at Greendown and by the lower chimney. The design was produced in consultation with local people through the Friends of Troopers Hill. We initially produced a design brief and some initial ideas and sketches were discussed at our meeting on 15th November. A further meeting was held after our Work Party on 1st December where the designs were discussed with local people. We also delivered letters to the houses that overlook the Greendown entrance describing the proposals to give everyone a chance to have their say.

The type of fence to be used was the main subject of discusion, with the concensus being that we should use 'Estate Fencing' of the same type that has been installed at Callington Road Nature Reserve . The plans for the Greendown entrance were approved at our meeting in January, a sketch view and plan are shown below (click on the images to enlarge). The main aims of the design are to allow easier access for families with pushchairs and to make the entrance safer by moving the access point away from the road junction and futher up Greendown. Once the design was agreed our designer produced detailed costings.

The plans for the entrance by the lower chimney have now also been finalised in line with the outline agreed in November.

The full plans can be downloaded from the links below; these are A1 size drawings so please note the large file sizes.

Having agreed the design, we now need to get the work done! Our aim was to move quickly with the work to the Greendown entrance and in January 2008 we applied for funding to YANSEC. We are pleased to say that the application was successful and works started in April 2009; follow the link below for more details:

The design process for the other entrance has highlighted the fact that it is sensible to combine the reconstruction of the entrance with work to preserve the chimney. Since this is a listed structure further investigations are required to confirm what needs doing. We are therefore planning this work for 2010.
