Ice cream wafer factory

Under the 'Memories of Troopers Hill' thread about a year ago there was a mention of the ice-cream wafer factory that used to stand on the corner of Beaufort Rd and Strwaberry Lane.
Thanks to Barton Hill History Group we now have some photos of both the factory and the house where the Safferie family used to live - they can be seen here.

Re: Ice cream wafer factory

Hello All
The BH group have saved me a search with their photographs of the Stafferie House. I had been thinking of trying to trace any descendants of the Ashmead family who might have had such shots but the ones shown are just as I remember the house and it most definitely was Fred Ashmead's place. I wonder who originally built the place ? It was certainly a "one-off" for the area.

Re: Ice cream wafer factory

Hi Dick,

The house is shown on the the 1902 map, but not the 1890 one so it must have been built around the same time as the other houses in the area. Glebe Rd and Lambley Rd also appear in 1902 but were not there on the 1890 version. The maps of course may have been out of date by the time they were published. Obviously it would have been a prime plot with much more land than any of the other houses around.

Re: Ice cream wafer factory

The history of the factory and the house was mentioned at our meeting last night.

Pauline told us that the house 'The Poplars' was built by a Mr Bryant who also built the boot factory in Beaconsfield Rd. The house then passed to Mr Ashmead (as Dick has already mentioned) next was Mr Chambers and then Mr Stafferie who built the factory on land where Mr Chamber had kept pigs. Pauline briefly worked at the factory which she says produced ice cream cones rather than wafers.

As with the house the boot factory is shown on the 1902 map but not on the 1890 one.

We are hoping to publish more of Pauline's memories of the area in future editions of 'The Hill'.
