Path progress

Well, they've got the base complete - the topping is due to be done tomorrow (Friday). For current state of affairs, see here:

www.bristolbroadcast.tv/trooper/Thursdaypath.wmv

It's seems we are failing a little in our mission. Whilst on the Hill this afternoon, I spoke to two people who gave negative reactions. One was one of the workmen (who lives locally) who said he and his mates were upset about the trees being cut down. I explained why, and hopefully he will spread the message.

Less satisfactory was the view of a dog walker I met. Very negative about the path (not entirely surprising at the moment). When I explained the neeed for wheelchair and disabled access, the response was "Why? We've never needed it before." I left it there needless to say. With some people you just aren't going to get anywhere!

Re: Path progress

Excellent video, Kit. Loved the sound track as well. Sorry to hear about the dog walker but you can't win over everyone.

I hope to be up on the hill tomorrow lunch time (work permitting) and look forward to seeing the surface going on.

Great to see things are progressing.

Re: Path progress

The answer of course is that while those of us who are reasonably fit and agile don't need the path; other people who have difficulties walking or are in wheelchairs will be very pleased that they can get on to the hill and admire the wonderful views that many other people take for granted.
The seats will also be a great benefit to many many people.

Re: Path progress

The contractors doing the final surfacing visited the site today (Friday) but will be back next week to do the work.
I have seen a sample of the aggregate they are going to use, it is a good match to the colours of the rock on the hill - the path will look much less stark was the new surfacing is in place.

Re: Path progress

The latest date for the final surfacing is 'towards the end of next week'. So it should be complete for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Re: Path progress

I was pleased to see that the path surface was completed today; there are some photos here.
We must say many thanks to YANSEC who provided the grant for the path last year. We look forward to working with YANSEC again in the future to bring more improvements to Troopers Hill.
Thanks also to everyone at Bristol Parks who has put so much time and effort into getting the path completed and who took the time to meet us and resolve the issues when things weren't being done as we expected. Bristol Parks also provided additional funding to extend the path further than we originally evisaged through their diabled access fund. They will also be installing two new seats within the next few weeks.
While completion of the path took longer than we hoped, I think the end result is excellent. It is a great example of how Friends of Troopers Hill, with the support of organisations like YANSEC, can work with Bristol Parks to improve the hill for the benefit of everyone.

Great place to ride a bike and for youths to congregate - completely alien. Hey but you know my views anyway!

Re: Path progress

Went up there on Tuesday & spoke to some people. A chap a bit older than me with a Labrador? Retriever? (yellow dog ok!) liked the path, liked the things we do, goes up there in all weathers and has seen deer etc. A couple with a new baby test-drove the path for me and found it good. The baby didn't wake up either! They would like to be FOTHs too one day .. probably when the baby's a bit bigger, so I said see you in 10 years or so. It's good to know the next generation see FOTHing as important too.

The path isn't half as bad as I thought it'd be and when the bits around the edge heal it won't look any more intrusive than the other paths. I wonder if it will wear well or if we'll have the probs they had in the Isle of Wight with that surface.

Saw a chap in a wheelchair successfully negotiate the gate at Malvern Rd the other day. He was someone's visitor from somewhere else, but their hosts might ring the council for a key for future visits. He was a new wheelchair user too, so well done him for getting through the gate.

And .. there was a bunch of little boys and their mums flying kites and wondering when the Kite Festival would be. Obviously inspired by our mini kite-festival last year.

Re: Path progress

I spent many an hour with a kite on the hill near to the chimney, when I was a boy (seems like only yesterday). My grandfather used to make them out of bamboo cane and polythene or basically any material that would catch the wind. I remember the long tails of the kites and losing one or two when the string snapped - these kites were as big as me and I remember having my shoulders held to stay on the ground such was the pull from the kite - those were the days.

Re: Path progress

LOL! I love kites! I remember when my nephew was about 5 & stunt kites were new. We were in Scotland on holiday & he grabbed hold of the tail and ... away he went! Not too high, and he returned unscathed, thank goodness. He's in his mid-30's now and none the worse for wear.
