Friends of Troopers Hill
Stepping Forward Project

£36,000 for Troopers Hill

Friends of Troopers Hill have been awarded three grants to improve the experience of people visiting Troopers Hill.

The aim of the projects was to give a better quality experience to all visitors to Troopers Hill Local Nature Reserve (LNR) while maintaining the appearance and feel of a wild oasis in the urban environment of east Bristol and protecting this important wildlife habitat.

The lead funder for the 'Stepping Forward' Project is the Community Spaces programme. The Community Spaces grants programme is being managed by Groundwork UK as an Award Partner to the Big Lottery Fund. Community Spaces is part of the Big Lottery Fund's Changing Spaces initiative.

Stepping Forward 2013
Experiencing Troopers Hill

In July 2012 we were told that we had been successful in an application to Community Spaces for a 'Sustainability Grant' of £3,500, this was for two projects aimed at people using the Hill. These projects build on the work done in 2012 as part of the main project described below. The first project was to create an audio trail and the second was a project working with local schools. A small part of the grant also funded the purchase of new tools and gloves (including childrens' sizes) for use at our regular Work Parties. As part of the audio trail project we are also running a series of guided walks in 2013, these are listed on our Events Page.

One of the guided walks was a tree gazing walk with Tony Titchen. As part of the project we have also put together a Tree Trail with labelled trees and an information pack that you can download.

We were pleased to be able to announce at our Slide and video show & AGM on 6th Dec 2012 that we have also been successful in a further application to the Co-operative Membership Community Fund to enhance the school project. This grant of £2,000 also paid for our Information Leaflet to be refreshed and for all of our set of 3 leaflets to be reprinted.

In November 2011 Friends of Troopers Hill were awarded just over £30,500 of Big Lottery money via the Community Spaces Programme. This was for a project to improve access on the Hill that was run from January to November 2012.

We are pleased to say that the Stepping Forward Project was shortlisted for the Bristol Green Volunteers Awards Project of the Year 2012
- More about Green Volunteers Bristol >>

This success followed lots of work during 2011 to put together the application after we got through stage 1 of the application process in December 2010.

Timeline of the project (pdf) >>

The main project included:
 Improvement works to flights of steps on the LNR;
 Waymarking to woodland paths to be designed by a community artist at workshops;
 Improvements to the most used access route and road crossings;
 Installation of an information sign and bench to wheelchair access path;
 Installation of an interpretation board;
 Woodland path improvements using volunteers and offenders on the community payback scheme;
 A launch event to involve as many members of the community as possible.

Thank you to everyone who helped us win this grant. Your letters of support and completed questionnaires all helped to make our case. Thank you to all the volunteers who stuck address labels, delivered questionnaires, recorded replies, manned information stands, collected quotations, attended meetings, completed and checked the application. It has been an incredibly busy year and 2012 will deliver, with a bit more hard work, the much wanted result better access to Troopers Hill.
