On a glorious sunny morning Friends of Troopers Hill committee member, Rob Acton-Campbell, led a group of 29 on a walk around Troopers Hill and Crew's Hole to talk about the history of the area.
After looking at the newly planted orchard on Troopers Hill Field, we walked through Troopers Hill Woods and into Avon View Cemetery to talk about William Butler and Handel Cossham.
Next we walked down Blackswarth Road (which was being resurfaced) to join the River Avon at the bridge to St Anne's. From here we followed the riverside path to Conham. At stops on the way we spoke about the industrial past of the area, the Lead Works, St Anne's Board Mills and Butler's Tar Works as well as the Wesleyan Chapel built in 1860.
From Conham (after a loo stop) we climbed up to Dundridge Park and then walked across to Troopers Hill, passing the site of the White House on Corkers Hill.
At the Hill we spoke about the Emra Family and the copper & brass industry.
Thank you to all those who joined us and especially for all the positive feedback on a very enjoyable morning.
