interested in joining a work party

hi everyone. I am a student at the university of west england, at the moment studying science with the intention of going on to study environmental biology and a get a career in ecology or conservation. I just recently come upon this website, having never heard of troopers hill nor knowing there was a nature reserve in the city other than ashton court. I really like the sound of the work parties, and am interested in joining one. I have afew questions, however. firstly, is this a paid job? Secondly, could I have some more info on what these work groups involve and how to apply? I have left my email if anyone would like to contact me that way.

thanks for your time, Jonathan White

Re: interested in joining a work party

Jonathon,

Thanks for your interest, I'll send you an email directly but in brief the answers to your questions are:
There are details of some of the many other nature reserves in Bristol on our Nature in the City page, they obviously need better marketing!
Friends of Troopers Hill do not get paid, we are all volunteers. We work closely with Bristol Parks who carry out the larger scale works through their contractor BCS.
The work parties are 2 hrs with time for coffee or tea and biscuits. A lot of what we do is cutting bramble and saplings where they are spreading into the heathland and grassland. One of the main aims is to enjoy ourselves!
There is no need to apply just turn up at the Greendown entrance (which is about half way up Troopers Hill Rd). There is then a bit of paper work to go through and a safety briefing. You are then covered by Bristol City Council's insurance.
Dates and times are on the Work Parties page, the next one is 10am this coming Saturday. Work Parties are cancelled if there is heavy rain since the ground then becomes too slippery - it also reduces the enjoyment!

Re: interested in joining a work party

Next Work Party Sat 12th January 10am, meet at Greendown. We will be clearing bramble and saplings from the area to the left of the path up from the lower chimney.
As always this is subject to the weather being OK.
