Malvern Road Tip

There have been several references in the 'Memories of Troopers Hill' thread about tipping in the area that is now the woodland below Malvern Road and the Field.
It seems that this started soon after Bristol City Council bought the land in 1956 and finished in the early 70s. The type of landscape that is now on Troopers Hill obviously covered a much larger area before it was covered. From what Ian says we also lost a spring filled pond.
We have been told that the material excavated from Old Market Underpass was tipped there - can anyone confirm that?
Does anyone have any photographs of the tip in operation or any other information?

Re: Malvern Road Tip

We've heard rubble from the blitz was dumped there too. And the spring-filled pond would go some way to explaining how muddy the field can get.

I don't have any hard evidence though :-(

Re: Malvern Road Tip

The pond was where the trees now are almost dead centre of that area. The tipping started in ernest around the mid to late 60's. I know that some material came from the keynsham area because I found a fossilised tutle shell that the Bristol museum said came from the Keynsham area. I think the museum still has the fossil.

I know its never been confirmed but I'm pretty sure a lorry that was tipping its load rolled all the way down and that parts of it were left in the tipped material. I'm sure it was reported in the paper but I think Rob drew a blank on that.

Re: Malvern Road Tip

Rob, there are a lot of references on the Bristol Record Office online catalogue (http://archives.bristol-city.gov.uk/). I found 31 when I put in Malvern Road Tip as a search. This includes 42054.G.Drawer 1/03445 - Malvern Road Tip Rates of Movement
42054.G.Drawer 1/03471 Malvern Road Tip - Geological Section Sheet 9 from from 1/9/1969.

The list goes on, including Site Investigation Hole Results, Records of Movements, Proposed Stability Works, proposed stormwater sewer, proposed drainage and stability works and so on. Unfortunately no obvious details about what was dumped but we might find out more when we look.

The records ofice is open 10am-4pm on the first two Saturdays of the month so we could go after our Saturday morning work party.
