Rights of way off Lamb Hill - one for Ian, Dick & those with long memories
We got a letter through our door today about the lanes on and between Lamb Hill and Strawberry Hill, particularly one that ran between the bungalows at the top (31 & 25 Lamb Hill) & went to Avonbank that used to be a kennels. Also across the bottom of the field at Avonbank and on down Strawberry Hill.
Basically the footpaths aren't there & the landowner says they never were. The owner of Avonbank, who sent the letter believes they were rights of way.
We also received a Bristol City Council Public Rights of Way Evidence Form to fill in and return.
Do any of you remember these paths? I certainly remember the path between the bungalows & going down there to a gate to look at the ponies.
If you do remember & want to fill in a form, I do have the contacts of the people at Avonbank, so contact me (or FOTH) and I'll pass it on.

Re: Rights of way off Lamb Hill - one for Ian, Dick & those with long memories
The path stopped at the kennels there was never a right of way through during my memory and as a youngsters my fiends and I pretty much went everywhere around the hill and both lanes. There was a derelict house on what was a field I remember there being an old car left in a tin garage.
We used this field for slow worm hunting as it had plenty of rusting tin/corrugated iron pieces on the grass that the slow worms loved. There was the odd grass snake here as well. I remember sneaking onto the land because the house opposite overlooked it and the elderly gentleman that lived there took exception to us rooting around on the site – there was the odd pear and apple tree on the land as well. But there certainly wasn’t a way through the only way onto this land was through a gateway (passed an old wooden horse drawn carriage that was well rotted and then out down a track that was by the new house that keeps the assortment of vehicles and animals, this track has gone along with a lot of the ground that seems to be forever dug out. The access track that is parallel to Strawberry Lane also wasn’t there and access to the houses was always on foot.

The path is shown on the 1890 OS map, but this does not prove that it was a right of way.
Apparently what is needed is evidence from at least 20 people that they used the path to get from Lamb Hill to Strawberry Lane.

The lady looking for evidence of the rights of way was at the Barton Hill History Group meeting and was able to ask people there for information. I don't know how successful she was.

I would have played in the lanes and the allotments (as my dad rented two) in the early 60's - I would think from 1963 onwards.
Looking at local live the field has been all but carved away and the site cleared. The old house erased and where the new house adjoins that land it too has cut the ground out.
