Deer Sightings

Ian asked in another thread about deer sightings on the Hill so I thought I would start this one for people to add to.

Rob and I have seen a number of roe deer on and near Troopers Hill over the years, including two adults in full daylight at about 3pm wandering quietly over the Hill with absolutely no humans in view. It was amazing.

Our next door neighbours had a doe and fawn looking in through their patio doors one morning.

We and our neighbours had so many daytime sightings, particularly of deer crossing Troopers Hill Rd, that one of our neighbours asked if signs could be put up warning car drivers. She was more worried about the deer than the cars!

In September 2004 Sally Oldfield put me in contact with the Highways department and after a brief meeting with the East Area Traffice Engineer on Troopers Hill Rd. he was happy take back the recommendation that signs be put up. The result was the two warning signs that you can see covering both directions on the lower part of Troopers Hill Rd.

Since the Bull Lane (off the lower part of Nibletts Hill) flats went up we have not seen the deer so often but that may be coincidence and us spending less time in the garden.

By the way, the kissing gate at the lowest entrance to Troopers Hill seem to provide no barrier at all to the deer.

So, what deer have you seen and when?

Re: Deer Sightings

I regularly saw them until about 18 months ago. There was a family of them (2 adults and 2 younger ones)and I used to be able to get quite close to them - sadly I think they have gone.

I have still seen a couple of deer in the Avon valley past the last visible point of the sewer pipe. You have to be very quite and keep a keen eye open as they are very hard to see. There is plenty of undergrowth for them to disappear into.

Re: Deer Sightings

Apparently, deer seen on the hill within the last few days near the chimney and on the field.

All seen by a (very) early morning dog walking neighbour.

Re: Deer Sightings

That's great news - I will keep my eyes open. I am usually around and about at 04:45am
