Save a tree?
Under a thread called "Friends Policy" there is an outline in general terms on what issues Friends of Troopers Hill should get involved in.
I have just had the email below from Alison Bromilow of the Bristol Parks Forum (Friends of Troopers Hill are a member of the Forum) - do you think this is something Friends of Troopers Hill should comment on and if so should it be to support saving the tree?
Please let me know what you think,
Thanks,
Susan
"Further to the discussion of this topic at the Bristol Parks Forum meeting in January, I am forwarding some information from a group that has now been set up called Bristol Street Trees. They have set up a website and there is a link to the petition to Save the Plane Tree next to Bascule Bridge.
Do you think Bristol Parks Forum should sign this petition?

If Bristol is to be the green capital we must halt the felling and plant large trees
I wanted to let you know that we have now launched a new organisation, called Bristol Street Trees . This ...has come from our realisation that we are dealing with a Bristol-wide problem. We have put together a new web site Bristol Street Trees which is currently under development. On the web site we have produced a manifesto for Bristol Street Trees ..... Comments on the manifesto would be gratefully appreciated. Our next big project is to produce a street tree strategy for Bristol. We need your help for this to be effective.
Tree to save. Please sign the petition to save the tree on Welsh back Save the landmark tree on Welsh Back.

Re: Save a tree?
No, I don't think it's something we should comment on at all.
I think planting Platanus species so close to roadways and houses was rather shortsighted, however that was a decision made 50 or more years ago.
Time to replant those trees which are no longer an appropriate size, or in an appropriate position, with more suitable species like Prunus.

Re: Save a tree?
Hi
I think this particular subject is way beyond any FOTH remit. However it is worthwhile maintaining links such as these so that current conservation issues are brought to the attention of individuals who may have an interest (sympathetic or not as the case may be) and would not have heard of them otherwise.

Re: Save a tree?
I agree with Helliott, it is a long way from our remit, but we should bring these things to members' attention.
There has been a certain amount of discussion about it on Flickr:

I don't really understand what's going on. The Bristol Trees group doesn't look very official and I do wonder why I would take their word for it, if I didn't know it was to do with the Parks Group.
London is famous for its planes and they don't seem to be cutting theirs down, though there have always been complaints from people who have to park under them.
Are the Bristol trees being "scapegoated" because the sides of the docks need repairing? Or because repair will be cheaper without them? It seems pretty clear the tree in question is going to come down one way or another to make the developer's life easier, and it's probably healthier for the city to have a big discussion about it than for someone to just back a truck into it.
And if trees do (eventually) have to come down, I can't see what's wrong with replacing them with cherries. Bristol Street Trees don't do themselves any favours calling them "gardenesque".
BTW, There are a few trees on Air Balloon Road that have been sawn off at the knees. What's that about?

Re: Save a tree?
Just to make it clear I don't believe that the Bristol Street Trees group has any links to the Parks Forum, I'm not even sure whether they would be entitled to join. Alison at the Parks Forum simply passed the information on to us because there had been discussions about street trees at Parks Forum meetings. This shouldn't be taken as giving the group any additional credibility.
Bristol's street trees are maintained by Bristol Parks because it makes sense for one department to be responsible for all of Bristol's trees - in parks and on streets. However, there is a separate budget for the street trees. The last BCC budget round allocated more money for Park trees, but not for street trees.

Re: Save a tree?
Liz, I presume the trees on Air Balloon road were a victim of road safety/bus lane requirements. Again, they were far too close to a main road for comfort, don't get me wrong, I love trees, however, I do prefer the way that the trees on The Kingsway have been 'pollarded', I guess that was not an option.

Re: Save a tree?
Roger,
Agreed, but why cut them off at 1 meter tall? Why not get rid of them altogether? I can't see what good it does to leave a huge stump like that.

Re: Save a tree?
There were heakthy trees on a lot of the roads around here, Hillside Road, Nags Head Hill, The Avenue, Queens Road, Summer Hill Road, Beaufort Road. They didn't appear to be doing any structural harm and certainly added to the street furniture. Hacking them down or lopping them is calous and not warranted. In Troopers hill road there was a lovely cherry tree and copper birch that suddenly disappeared overnight it was there in the morning and gone when I returned from work. I was never sure if this was the council or a private action - I never got to the bottom of it.
Similarly a number of birch trees have disappeared from the hill I was also very sad to see this.

Re: Save a tree?
I can only speculate Liz...Possibly the money was available for felling but not for stump grinding...
Bye the bye, only a select few trees have been pollarded on the Kingsway, a further few have been pruned and yet more untouched to my eye. I wonder if pollarding has to be done in stages?
