Duct to Troopers Hill chimney
Does anyone know when the duct to Troopers Hill chimney (the one at the top of the hill) was removed or demolished?
Rob and I have been told stories about children playing in the duct. There was a rumour about a boy being trapped. Some people have said it was demolished during the 1950s but we have never seen any photos of the ducting or found anyone who really seems to remember it.
Memories, sketches, photos, contacts, records, anything would be welcome.
All the best,
Susan

Re: Duct to Troopers Hill chimney
Hi Susan,
As you can imagine TH was the subject of some conversation among us this morning. During this, Charlie mentioned that there were THREE chimneys on the hill, the larger two were demolished (obviously, as they're no longer there!) I'll try and find out if he remembers them himself, or if this is anecdotal, also if he knows anything about the ducting. Does anyone else remember the other two chimneys?

Re: Duct to Troopers Hill chimney
Perhaps Charlie would like to see the photos from 1953: http://www.troopers-hill.org.uk/history/1953views.htm
There's the little chimney at the bottom of the hill (still standing) and the tarworks chimney (I think) in the first photo. Unless those are the other two chmneys, it lookas as if they'd probably gone by 1953.
Susan, I think the remains of the conduit can possibly be seen in the middle photo. If so, it seems to have gone by then too.

Thanks
Must be anecdotal, Charlie's not old enough to remember pre-53!(even if he seems it sometimes).
Was the corner building built by the same person who built the Black Castle? I seem to recall hearing that part of the hill's area was once owned by him. (Reeves?) The stonework looks like recycled slag.

Hello again. I can say that as of my earliest recollection of TH which was about 1936, there was no part of the duct intact. There was the "trench" of course but it was not covered over at any point.

Re: Duct to Troopers Hill chimney
I used to weight train with a gentleman called Bert Potter who was a keep fit fanatic right up to the end. He was in his late 90's when he passed away but he can remember the duct being intact and the story about a boy being stuck in it. I guess this would have been really early 1900's. It's a real shame that a lot of history has been lost because it was only kept alive in memories that people had.

Thanks Ian,
I hope this forum can help in a small way to preserve some of these memories.

Re: Duct to Troopers Hill chimney
My father (born 1902)grew up in Cassey Bottom Lane, I remember him telling me that him and his brothers used to go up on the hill and warm themselves on the pipe coming up the hill to the large chimney on the top of the hill. The dating of this would be somewhere between 1907 and 1916 when he started work and had no time for play.
