You mean you were still there on Sunday morning waiting for lizards? Well, it paid off, dinnit!

Re: there be lizards here.............

Brilliant photos - on balance I think the dark one on the left is the male and that he has had rather a good breakfast by the bulges of his stomach. However my recognition chart is not very helpful, nor are the various websites, particularly when they talk about turning them over to see their undersides. Yeah right! Roger, do you agree with my guess at the sexes?

No - when we saw "our" lizard we did not have a camera between us so you are officially Troopers Hill's official lizard photographer until proven otherwise. 8-)

Re: there be lizards here.............

dark = male was my guess from what little I had read, would also explain the 'spare' male hanging around nearby :)

I have around a dozen photos alltogether.

Very good!! Roger, thanks for sending the record to BRERC. The dark lizard is the female, or put better, the males are speckled, which shows very well in the photo of the two on the log.

Re: there be lizards here.............

incidentally, and thanks to Nick H for popping along, I do hope that everyone knows (and if not, they will now) to record all appropriate wildlife sightings via the forms at

http://www.brerc.org.uk/recording/online_form.htm

There is probably a postal way of doing it, I don't know that!!

Re: there be lizards here.............

A beautiful photo - thanks, Roger. Nice to see them all with a full complement of toes - I have in my possession an out of print book "The British Amphibians and Reptiles" by Malcolm Smith. It is very informative but to do his research he identified lizards he was monitoring by cutting off different toes. This book was first published in 1951 so maybe research techniques have changed. I am happy to lend it to anyone locally if you want to find out more about these fascinating reptiles.

Dear Hill Newsletter Editor - any chance of one of Roger's photos making it in the next edition and perhaps a small article on common lizards? Will the photo work OK in black and white? Viviparous would be a good word for our spell checkers.

All the best, happy weekend to everyone and may the sun shine on our work party tomorrow 10am - midday starting by meeting on the corner of Greendown and Troopers Hill Rd. All are welcome. Tasks will include litter picking, moving already cut bramble and holm oak hunting.

Cheers,

Susan
