Promoting local businesses

I have said in an email that Friends of Troopers Hill are very much in favour of promoting local businesses. So, how does everyone feel about a thread talking about all those businesses that we think are excellent in the area that is local to Troopers Hill?

For example:
We used Farrows, the award winning fish and chip business in Kingsway Shopping Precinct to supply fish and chips for our 10th anniversary celebration of Troopers Hill being a nature reserve. Excellent fish and chips and up to the challenge of supplying more that 20 portions of fish and chips. Really friendly and cook every order from scratch. Queues out of the door are a good indication of what everyone else thinks of them locally.
Gingells, the butchers on 19 Nags Head Hill - absolutely excellent meat and supplies cheese, eggs, stuffing, sauces etc. Very friendly and if you don't know precisely what you need are very helpful with suggestions.
Jones the bakers - 97 Summerhill Rd - real bread, excellent pasties, special breads and friendly staff.
Butternut Deli - 341 Church Rd opposite Smiths the shop that has the excellent light display at Christmas OR between Jones the bakers and the St George library. This has been open since before Christmas. Does a yummy line in olives also has all sorts of breads, biscuits, dried goods, oils etc. Friendly, helpful staff and lots of organic options.
Goldings the ironmongers - in Hanham High St. Seem to have practically anything you need and will often order what they don't. The orders are in very quickly. They are often are cheaper than some major DIY places and the staff are helpful and knowledgable.
1st Call Taxis, Lawrence Hill - I had an awful time when I first came to this area trying to find taxis that turned up for the time I booked. 1st Call do!

Re: Promoting local businesses

I am going to champion the "Lord Raglan", smokey as hell, however, as we wish to support local
businesses then we MUST include our local pub.

Currently, No food is served apart from bar nibbles (free) the beer is quite ok due to very knowledgeable bar staff.

From the 1st of July it will become "non smoking" at that point it will need our support more than ever, Gary is great landlord and if we wished to publicize Trooppers Hill, he would help out.

Re: Promoting local businesses

I like the idea of supporting the Lord Raglan.

We have organic veg delivered by Green Wheel.
Green Wheel (Organic Produce) Ltd
5 Hudds Vale Rd
Bristol, BS5 7HG
0117 956 9767
& they do veggie bags big and small, with or without fruit and you can let 'em know if you don't like sprouts! Ours costs £12 a fortnight.

Another local trader (within walking distance) is Graham Batt on the Feeder road. For all your Audi, VW etc etc (e.g. Skoda and Volvo) needs 39-46 Feeder Rd, Bristol, BS2 0SE
0117 971 7057
(a well kept secret is he also does Citroens as Audi drivers wives often have them Hmmm...)

Can also recommend the pick n' mix from A&J News on Hillside Road. You can get loads for 50p. Maybe that's one for our younger members

Re: Promoting local businesses

This is looking good - and I must mention Beeses Tea Rooms - now open every weekend who do a nice line in real ale, ciders and perries plus the usual alcohol and soft drink lines. Provided the river level is OK they offer a ferry service across the river for 25 pence and Eastwood Farm Nature Reserve is right next door. Food is good and very reasonably priced. We have their link listed under our Friends' Friends section.

I like the idea of green wheel, do they have a website, if not any idea of their opening hours so i can pop along and make arrangements. It could be exactly what I am looking for.

Re: Re: Promoting local businesses

Well, at this point and on this subject, there's a whole bunch we need to mention:

The Trooper pub (Bryants Hill). Well known to Friends as we often adjourn there after our meetings. Always a friendly welcome, a lot less smoky then most other pubs, a very helpful landlady - Lynne - who generously donated a crate of cider as a prize for our recent quiz.

Karparts, Kingsway shops. Donated a dashboard fan and a car valeting kit for our quiz prizes. Always seem to be open, very helpful and they've had everything I ever go in for.

Smile supermarket, Kingsway shops. Nearly always open, have the local Post Office and kindly donated a bottle of Red Wine for our quiz night.

Booze and Food, Nags Head Hill, Very local, nice selection of wine usually and gave us a bottle of Chardonnay for our quiz. You always get a welcome.

Bristol Car Mart, Nags Head Hill. Can't say I've bought a car from them yet, but generously gave us £10 sponsorship for our quiz prize.

The Pied Horse pub, Summerhill Road. Not a pub I get to very often and even though it's not our local, Gary the landlord gave us 3 bottles of Premium Cider and Perry for the quiz night.

Lifestyles Fitness Centre, Clouds Hill Road. Your local fitness centre in the old Methodist church. John gave us £10 sponsorship towards our quiz prize and also a promise of a free session - to be raffled at the next Music on the Hill event.

They've all been very helpful and generous folks, so give them your business whenever you can.

You might like to know that Beeses will be open every evening except Mondays from Easter onwards. They have also been doing some improvements. The latest news is in their Newsletter.
Might be a suitable after work party venue for evening work parties?

Rob, is Bees tea gardens no-smoking inside or not?

If it is, then it's a nice alternative 'till july 1st.

Spent lunchtime today in Beeses. If it's a non-smoking pub, there seem to be a lot of people ignoring it!

It seemed to be when we had the quiz. David was one of 3 people smoking outside he says. And it wasn't my steely glances sending him there.

Yea, It turns out David & the other 2 smokers were being polite. It is a "yes smoking" venue.

Re: Promoting local businesses

I have recently tried some very tasty venison, pork and beef sausage and some cream cheese from Smakus, the Polish food shop at 280 Church Rd. Very helpful staff gave me a taste of the sausage to assist me in my choice. They have a website www.smakus.co.uk

Has The Trooper changed hands? It seemed very different when I was in there a week or so ago.

Know what you mean. Subsequent enquiries revealed that Lynne has been on holiday for several weeks and is due back round about now. Next visit will no doubt reveal things back to normal.

Well done everyone who voted for Farrows in the Evening Post's quest to find the best fish and chip shop in Bristol. Farrows won and have a big banner outside saying thank you to the voters. 8-)

Re: Promoting local businesses

Glad to report that I had Farrows plaice and chips for tea last night and it was delicious as ever. I wasn't going to but I had been to 42nd Street and the smell of fish & chips was just too tempting!

Anyway, that's not what I'm here to say. We went to the Art Fair at the Folk House in Park St today and saw Jonathan Lane and his lovely photos. He sells them and they'd make jolly good pressies. You can see them all on Flickr.

Not just a local trader, but somwone well known to most of us, I think.

Re: Promoting local businesses

Just wanted to remind everyone that we have some great local traders. Particularly Derek at:
Graham Batt
39-46 Feeder Rd, Bristol,
BS2 0SE
0117 971 7057
They specialise in VW, Audi, Volvo etc, but they aren't too fussy and got my Citroen through its MOT today.

This is walking distance (very green!) from Troopers Hill. We've been going there for nearly 10 years and they are really good.

Re: Promoting local businesses

Very good coffee, not bad brownies and a great selection of secondhand books, CDs and DVDs to be found in a tiny shop on the corner of Barnes St and Church Rd next door to the pet food place. I think the shop is called The Lab. Owner is good fun (I think his name is Noah), other clientele are all very friendly. Do not expect order and tidiness or to be served very quickly; do expect friendliness, good coffee and probably stumbling over some good books.

2 very large mugs of real coffee and 2 brownies set me back just over £4 which is not bad in these days of CostaBomba coffee shops. The secondhand books I have bought so far have each been £2. I also succumbed to buying a brand new book "The Self Sufficient-ish Bible" there and met one of the authors - gosh, the first time I have had an author sign a book for me. He has an interesting website called www.selfsufficientish.com and leads foraging walks in St Werburghs.

Having attended the craft fair at Cabot Academy (I always do what Liz tells me to do) I found some wonderful cakes. There were individual banana and chocolate chip cakes, chocolate marbled cake, carrot cake and all sorts of yummy things. The business card associated with all this tasty stuff read "Have Your Cake and Eat it, Cakes for All Occasions, Drop in the shop at 140 Bell Hill Rd., St George, Bristol, BS5 7NF. Tel 0117 373 1305. We are the redundant cake decorators from Mountstevens". I think my convalescence may include a bit of hillwalking to find more of these delights.

By the way the Butternut deli has some wonderful olives stuff with lemon and orange peel - the only problem is they disappear too quickly.

The Red Flower Barrow, 184 Church Rd, judging by the quality of flowers that I have received (thank you everyone) is very good too.

Here endeth my latest plug for local businesses. Any more out there that you would like to recommend?

Re: Promoting local businesses

Glad you found "Have Your Cake and Eat It". I'm exceptionally picky about cake and if I say it's good it really is. They are two amazing ladies who got made redundant without any warning at all... they took the money, grew wings and flew.

I had my hair cut at Sassy in Hanham today. I love this place, they have stylists who can cut properly and they cater for all ages.
