Look out for frogs

A colleague at work who lives over in the direction of northwest Bristol tells me his pond was invaded by mating frogs yesterday. This probably means it is about to happen here as well. Last year we saw lots of frogs all hopping across Troopers Hill Rd from Troopers Hill. They then made their way to ponds and bizarrely a garage, in Parfitts Hill, Corkers Hill and beyond, so if you are out after dark watch where you are putting your feet or tyres. When I say lots, I mean it.

All the best,

Susan

Re: Look out for frogs

I thought it was toads that went walkabout in that way? Used to have thousands of toads crossing a road I lived on in Bournville (Birmingham). The council put up roadsigns.

Occasionally I used to help them cross the road, allthough i was never certain that I was taking them in the direction that they wanted to go :-)

Re: Look out for frogs

Toads definitely do go walking but frogs hop about and allegedly try to return to the pond from whence they came to mate but I don't know whether that is true. Doesn't seem likely otherwise new ponds, like ours was a few years ago, would not attract frog spawn but maybe the operative word is "try".

Anyway here's "hopping" that we have a good supply of frog spawn that hatches successfully.

Re: Look out for frogs

I did not see a frog on cassey bottom lane.

However, it can be assumed that they get up there.

PS

it confused me as to what I had trod on, I slid quite a way and when I picked myself up, I found the (ex)
frog.

Hope Roger is OK. Sorry the frog isn't. Still no spawn in our pond so be careful out there.

Re: Look out for frogs

I spotted a frog in poor condition on Parfitts Hill close to Troopers Hill Rd and there were suspiciously large ripples in our pond this evening.

Be careful out there ;-)

There is frog spawn in our pond. The spring has sprung - well almost. ;-)

Re: Look out for frogs

Rob confidently pointed out toad spawn to me in our pond today. Checking up on this I looked at this website and it confirms that toad spawn is in strings rather than a mass. However I then clicked on the video clip next to this information. It is hilarious. Not to be viewed with your children if they don't know about mating amphibians, you could have to handle some awkward questions.

Re: Look out for frogs

Hi All
re all things froggy. Please send the records of froga and toads (& newts) to the records centre - http://www.brerc.org.uk/recording/online_form.htm - as these are very important!

Frogs lay spawn in clumps, 0ne clump per female so if you can count the clumps then you can estimate the number of frogs using your pond to breed in!

Toads lay spawn in strings

At this time of year male frogs look a little toad-like but if it has a pointy wedge-shaped head an a humped back its a frog!

Re: Look out for frogs

Don't know what's happening to my pond. Last year it was full of frogs and spawn, but the spawn disappeared after a few days; this year it's been full of frantic froggy activity for at least two weeks now, but there hasn't been any spwan at all yet. Curious.
